Constant-site technique, or repeated cannulations of the same site, has been used worldwide to cannulate native AV fistulas for hemodialysis for more than 25 years. But only recently have needles designed specifically for contant-site cannulation been made available.

Clinical experience demonstrates that the incidence of pain, hematoma, infection and infiltrations during cannulation can be reduced by utilizing the constant-site technique. Only Medisystems offers ButtonHole needle sets with anti-stick dull bevel specifically designed for the constant-site technique.

Safe and easy cannulation with the constant-site technique.

Begin by canulating the carefully selected sites with a sharp AV fistula needle. It is important to cannulate the developing constant-site in the exact same place, using the same insertion angle and depth of penetration each time.

Once a scar tissue tunnel track is well formed, the patient can begin using Medisystems' ButtonHole needle sets with anti-stick dull bevel. The needle is advanced along the established scar tissue tunnel track, minimizing patient pain and need for topical anesthetics.

Proven benefits for both patients and staff

Studies have shown many clinical benefits from using the constant-site technique with native AV fistulae.

  • Use of the constant-site technique results in fewer infections and fewer missed sticks and infiltrations.
  • The technique also helps reduce incidence of hematoma and risk of thrombosis.
  • The anti-stick dull bevel inhibits cutting of the tissue surrounding the established scar tissue tunnel track.
  • The scar tissue tunnel track makes cannulation less painful and can reduce patient fear.
  • The constant-site technique is an excellent option for the home or self-care patient.
  • The anti-stick dull bevel reduces the risk of accidental needlesticks, complying with OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogen Standard.
